Why ‘Sister Wives’’ Kody Brown Mocked the Idea of Soul Mates Before Marrying Robyn Brown
Meri Brown wanted the family, she didn't just want the man.
But ultimately the Sister Wives star felt she ended up with neither.
When Meri first relocated to Flagstaff, Ariz. with her then-husband Kody Brown and his three other wives, "I had that cute little playground," the mom to 29-year-old Leon Brown noted in the TLC series' April 20 episode.
At the time, she was still spiritually married to Kody and quite close to his fourth wife Robyn Brown. And the mom of five—including Solomon, 13, and Ariella, 9—spoke about bringing her youngest over to Meri's house to play.
"I was really looking forward to it," noted Meri. "And that happened very rarely before COVID even hit."
Even after staying at home and keeping six feet apart became the norm, "I had plenty of outdoor space," stressed Meri, "I took all the precautions." And still, she found herself on the outs of Kody and Robyn's quarantine crew.
For Robyn, however, that time period was pure survival mode.
"I had five kids constantly home," she recounted on the April 20 episode. "We were doing online school. And, you know, after the first year or so, she was traveling some. And so we really struggled to sort of get our schedules lined up. But I know we both wished we had been able to see each other more."
It's just that Meri was more of the if-they-wanted-to-they-would mindset.
"I had this bond with her," Meri noted of her relationship with Robyn, which was tight from the moment the divorcée joined the family in 2010. "And I'm now questioning, 'Why tell me that you want to have a relationship with me and then ghost me for months and months and months? Why, when COVID is happening and I'm following all the rules, do I not get to go over to your house and to your kids? Why do you not want to come over to my house for the kids to play outside in the yard?'"
Or, as Meri's best friend Jenn Sullivan bluntly put it, "She'd act like she was your best friend and then completely ignore you and hurt your feelings. Like, that’s really f--ked up. Either be an a--hole or don’t."
To hear Robyn tell it, though, she really, uh, busted her butt to maintain a relationship with her sister wife.
"I always had Meri’s back, even when people were plotting against her, ignoring her," Robyn stressed, "and I never felt a divide other than when she moved. That was when things changed. She changed it after that."
Because once Meri officially ended her three-decade union with Kody and made the 300-mile move to Utah, she left his sole remaining wife in the rearview as well, Robyn insisted.
"Soon after Meri moved, I reached out to her and I said, 'The next time you're in town, let's hang out, let's go do something,'" Robyn recounted. "And she very directly said, 'I don't know how to be friends with my ex husband's wife.' And that was really hard for me."
That's not to say Meri wasn't willing to put in the work.
"At that point I did not know how to be a friend with my ex husband's wife," she explained. "And I think that there are a lot of conversations that we would have to have before we did that."
There was also a good chance those chats would be uncomfortable AF.
"I'm not convinced that she would be fully honest with me," noted Meri, "and I'm not convinced that the things I would say to her, she would be very happy with."

But while she acknowledged that "things with Kody and Robyn are awkward," Meri's not opposed to experiencing a few growing pains.
"Part of me does kind of grieve the relationship that we had because she was a good friend, or at least I thought she was," said Meri. "And so part of me grieves that part that I thought that we were really close. But then other stuff, you know, through the years since then makes me just like, 'But were we though?' Like, 'cause if we were, we should have been able to stick it out."
Still, she's leaving that door ever so slightly ajar.
"I'm not saying that there couldn't be trust built," said Meri. "It would have to take a lot of hard conversations."
Potentially some apologizing as well.
"I heard that she was bashing me and making fun of me to her friends in public and I was very hurt by this," noted Robyn. "I don't think she wants a relationship. So I don't know. I guess I just have to deal with that."

Meri, however, isn't convinced their relationship has completely been divided.
"I get that she probably feels a lot of grief and pain about this demise of our relationship," she shared. "I feel that too. There is a lot of anger and pain and grief involved in it."
But with years of shared history, "If we could get to a place where we can just interact without it being weird, that would be awesome," said Meri. "That's what I hope for."
And the truth about her rift with Robyn isn't the only confession Meri has made this season. Keep reading to see the family's very honest takes on everything from jealousy to their shared finances.
