football.london writers make predictions for deadline day at Arsenal (2024)

Arsenal could be very active on transfer deadline day as Mikel Arteta eyes further incomings. The summer transfer window closes at 11pm tonight, with plenty of business still to be done.

The Gunners have so far sealed three permanent deals following the confirmation of David Raya's move, followed by the new additions of Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino.

Players have also left the Emirates Stadium, making it an evolution rather than an overhaul in north London this summer. But there could yet be more incomings and outgoings on transfer deadline day.

Arsenal could be in the market for another attacker, and there could be moves in the goalkeeper department with interest in Aaron Ramsdale meaning a replacement may need to be sought.

football.london writers have their say on what they think could happen on what is one of the craziest days in the footballing calendar.

So there are some obvious pieces of business that I'm expecting to get done which aren't exactly hot takes. I fully expect Eddie Nketiah to seal his move to Crystal Palace, while Aaron Ramsdale should follow him out the door to Southampton. I also think that when Ramsdale goes, a deal for Joan Garcia will be arranged pretty quickly. If that doesn't go through then Neto feels like a safe bet.

I also think that Dan Bentley could be an Arsenal player by the end of the day. Wolves seem to closer to a deal for Palace's Sam Johnstone and it seems the Eagles could do Arsenal another favour because that should open a pathway for Bentley to come back to north London where he spent time as an academy kid.

I do get the feeling that Arsenal's business will unfortunately end there though. I have a hope that they'll get close to bringing in a forward, but with each passing hour the deal looks unlikely.

I have to say I'd prefer for the Gunners to have the right person through the door than to have somebody for the sake of it. It does feel like a risk though to go into the season with a relatively threadbear set of attacking options and so many games to play.

Arsenal have had a pretty successful summer transfer window, in my opinion. David Raya, Ricardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino are all great additions but what would make it a perfect window is if a forward can be brought in.

With Eddie Nketiah off to Crystal Palace and Gabriel Jesus' worrying injury record, Kai Havertz is currently the only fit senior striker, although Leandro Trossard can do a job if required. That's fair from ideal, however, so I'm backing Edu to sign an out and out No.9 before the 11pm deadline. Viktor Gyokeres would be my pick and a signing such as this could fire the Gunners to Premier League glory.

Recent reports have linked the Gunners with Raheem Sterling and Kingsley Coman. The Chelsea winger should be avoided at all costs while I quite like Coman, but do they really need him?

Regarding outgoings it will be best for everybody if a buyer is found for Kieran Tierney, although this could prove to be difficult given he is currently out injured. I predict he will stay at the club and instead move on in January or earlier if the club and the left-back agree to mutually terminate his contract.

I also wouldn't rule out a permanent exit for Reiss Nelson. Leicester City were interested in the winger earlier in the window and a move to another Premier League side could suit everybody.

Joe Doyle

It's been an evolution more than a revolution at Arsenal this summer. Mikel Arteta and Edu clearly had their sights set on deals for Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino for some time - and they've eventually bagged the pair of them, as well as making David Raya's loan move permanent.

There have also been plenty of outgoings, and to be honest I think that's the only trend I can see continuing on deadline day. There is interest in bringing in another attacker, but I don't think the available candidates this close to the deadline are of the necessary calibre to improve Arsenal's team sufficiently.

Eddie Nketiah is all-but gone, and I think it would make sense for Reiss Nelson to find a move away. There seems to be plenty of interest in him, and he's not going to get the minutes he would like at the Emirates Stadium. If he's content to play a smaller part, by all means the Gunners should keep him as someone who can make an impact when called upon.
